Violent video games have been around since gaming began in the 1970s and is a term commonly used when describing games that feature violent content, such as blood, dismemberment, and murder.
There is no set genre that violent video games will find themselves in. They can be found in the fighting, RTS, FPS, platformer, adventure, and even puzzle genres.
One of the best-known franchises considered to be violent is the Mortal Kombat series of games. Since its launch, it has seen opposition and resistance due to the gratuitous violence depicted, with huge amounts of blood and its “Fatalities” being of particular note.
The Grand Theft Auto and DOOM franchises are also considered to be amongst the most controversial when it comes to their depiction of violence.
Although there are games that depict violence in a way that shows vast amounts of blood and spectacular and detailed finishing moves, the word violent is also used to describe games that feature any combat.
Games such as Tomb Raider, Hollow Knight, and StarCraft II are considered violent due to the themes they tackle and the combat featured within them.
Violent video games no longer have to feature lots of blood and dismemberments. As games continue to evolve, the argument that violent video games cause the player to be violent in the real world becomes less and less made.
